Destanın söz konusu versiyonlarından ilki, Gilgameš’in kadın meyhaneci Šiduri’den aldığı öğütlerle bilgeliğe ulaştığı ve yaklaşık MÖ 1700’e tarihlenen Eski Babilce versiyondur.

The Metamorphosis of Wisdom in the Epic of Gilgamesh: A Comparative Study the Old Babylonian and Standard Babylonian Versions

Texts categorized under the heading of Wisdom Literature indicate that the concept of wisdom, which initially referred to specific skills like farming, craftsmanship, and scribal work, or the experiential knowledge necessary for civilized life in Ancient Mesopotamia, underwent a significant transformation in the transition period from the 2nd millennium BCE to the 1st millennium BCE. Starting from this historical period, wisdom ceased to be a human quality acquired through lifelong experience and instead became a divine attribute or an esoteric knowledge bestowed upon those chosen by the gods. The differences between the two main versions of the Epic of Gilgamesh, which is generally not included in the Wisdom Literature category by modern researchers due to its formal characteristic as an epic narrative, offer one of the earliest pieces of evidence for this transformation in Ancient Mesopotamian literary tradition. The first of these versions is the Old Babylonian version, dated to approximately 1700 BCE, where Gilgamesh attains wisdom through the advice he receives from the female innkeeper Šiduri. The other version is the Standard Babylonian version, dated to approximately 1100 BCE, where Gilgamesh attains wisdom in Utnapištim’s land, a place inaccessible to ordinary mortals. In this study, the differences between the Old Babylonian and Standard Babylonian versions of the Epic of Gilgamesh, ranging from stylistic and linguistic distinctions to significant transformations in thematic, semantic, and structural dimensions, have been examined comparatively. Within the scope of this comparative method, both the relationship of the Epic of Gilgamesh with the wisdom tradition has been investigated, and the metamorphosis in the definition and source of the concept of wisdom in Ancient Mesopotamia through the epic, along with the relationship of this metamorphosis with the intellectual changes experienced during the Kassite Period, has been evaluated.

Destanın söz konusu versiyonlarından ilki, Gilgameš’in kadın meyhaneci Šiduri’den aldığı öğütlerle bilgeliğe ulaştığı ve yaklaşık MÖ 1700’e tarihlenen Eski Babilce versiyondur.
