Abstract
The empirical research process is work carried out to arrive at a better and more justifiable certainty, progress, improvement and expansion in our beliefs about the beings, phenomena or a certain topic of inquiry that we had at the beginning of the research process. When designing empirical research to obtain any one of these epistemological achievements at the end of the research progress, this paper suggests that the priority should be given not to the questions of which theory one should adopt, which methods one should employ, what kind of study (qualitative or quantitative) one should conduct and how to analyse the data but on thinking straight and assessing what kind of research design is possible under the conditions and constraints which are internal to a research design as well as the nature and internal-cycle of a research process. To this end, this study assesses and discusses some of the fundamental methodological constraints of a better research design after describing the main categories of constraints and their implications for the research process. These methodological constraints are related to: (i) the types of inferences to be made at the end of the research process, (ii) the nature of the knowledge-deficit that leads the researcher to conduct a new empirical research, (iii) what types of approaches (that is theory-driven- problem-driven and diagnostic) the researcher can adopt and what kind of methodological constraints each approach poses for the inferences to be made and (iv) the types and sources of knowledge and data by means of which inferences are to be made.
