The Effect of Digital Technology on the Dissolution of Beypazarı Family Structure Due to Divorces

Abstract

In a rapidly changing world, the socio-economic and cultural structures of societies are also undergoing transformation. This change/transformation in the world is affecting the social structure of all societies, including Turkey. This study explores family breakdown in Beypazarı due to divorce, based on participant experiences. Data were collected through qualitative methods by the five-member research team during five visits to the region between June and August 2024, using observation, interviews, and case studies. The sample includes divorced individuals and witnesses of divorce in their circles. Twenty-two in-depth interviews were held at various times and locations; participants' stories were recorded. The data obtained from the interviews were analysed by making use of the literature on digitalisation and divorce. Thematic analysis was used in the analysis of the data, common themes in the answers given by the participants were determined and evaluations were presented. In the study, six themes that may affect divorce or that can be associated with the phenomenon of divorce appear. These themes are; economic effects, technology and divorce after infidelity, the effect of children in the family in divorce, the effect of the root family in divorce, divorce and violence, and the perspective of the environment after divorce.
