Abstract

The comic book The Adventures of Tintin, created by Hergé, has been the target of much criticism as well as being famous. There are many traces of implicit and explicit imperialist and orientalist discourse in the cartoon albums criticised for being racist and pro-colonialism. In the context of Nietzsche’s understanding of art, it is possible to evaluate works of art through two different teachings: Apollonian and Dionysian. The film Tintin and the Golden Fleece, released in 1961, was shot in Turkey and Greece and is worth examining to see how Turkish culture is perceived by the West and whether there are any similarities between the perceptions of Turks and Greeks in European cinema. The use of qualitative content analysis while analysing the film is important in terms of showing the interdisciplinarity of literature. In this study, Apollonian and Dionysian images in the film Tintin and the Golden Fleece are explored, and tried to point out the ways to reach via the images that the film was written with an orientalist and colonialist perspective.
