Abstract

Sabahattin Ali's story “Hakkımızı Yedirmeyiz!” is a story that criticizes social distortion and corruption through civil servants with its ironic language and narration. In the story told from the perspective of the hero, the author explains how the masked faces use the opportunities of state institutions for their own benefit, while also underlining that the heroes do not observe any moral values. In the study, Sabahattin Ali's criticisms towards the individual and society through the ironic language he used in the story were determined. In this context, the concept of irony was emphasized in the study and its philosophical and literary aspects were examined. It can be said that irony, which includes implicit criticism, implying the opposite of what is said, and sarcasm, has a sarcastic and striking structure. The origin of the concept, also defined as a word game, goes back to Socrates, that is, to Ancient Greece. For this reason, ironic discourse can be considered as a "logical distortion" that stimulates the reader, makes them think, directs them to self-criticism, and opens the door to what is not said with its approach that extends beyond the discourse through insinuation. From this point of view, it can be said that with his story “We Won’t Let Our Rights Be Swept Away!” Sabahattin Ali made observations about the degeneration of the individual and society and gave the reader the opportunity to question many social issues such as loss of values, unjust gain, and moral deterioration.
