Abstract

According to Ayverdi, women are regarded as essential not only for their roles and responsibilities within the family but also for their contribution to the spiritual and cultural continuity of society. In this context, the author approaches the female figure from two main perspectives. The first type, associated with a traditional conservative female identity, represents the “modern woman” -one who is endowed with moral and spiritual values and embodies virtues such as decency, propriety, and nurturing. In contrast, the second type is portrayed as a woman who has distanced herself from traditional values and become alienated from her cultural roots- a figure described as “alafrangalized” or in other words, one who has lost her “essence.” From this perspective, Ayverdi idealizes intellectual women as dignified, chaste, and the spiritual backbone of society, whereas women who reject traditional values are depicted as symbols of social decay and cultural erosion. This study seeks to explore how female identity and typology are constructed in the works of Samiha Ayverdi, and what roles or missions are attributed to this identity. It examines how Ayverdi employs concepts such as religion, nationalism, and Sufism in shaping female identity -particularly that of the conservative woman- and how she interprets moral concepts such as decency, honor, and nurture. The study aims to offer a comprehensive framework for understanding the role and mission ascribed to women within the conservative intellectual tradition. Data for the research were collected using document analysis, resulting in the identification of seven analytical units. The data were interpreted through qualitative content analysis. This research is significant in that it illuminates the socio-historical foundations of female and conservative female identity in Turkey and reveals how this identity is interwoven with the broader social structure.
