Abstract

Ahmet Mithat Efendi, one of the important journalists, writers and thinkers of the Tanzimat period, spent intense mental effort on the “East-West” dilemma, one of the most vital issues of his period. While he criticizes the “East” image produced by Orientalism and the “Eastern” typology built by Orientalists, he also tries to draw the framework of an ideal Ottoman/Turkish/Muslim identity. The types he fictionalizes in his novels are not only on a discursive level; With their character, attitude and thoughts, they exist to destroy the image created by orientalists in the Western collective imagination. Nasuh’s first mission is to get to know the developments in Europe closely and to introduce the developments there to the Ottomans. The second is to destroy the “Eastern/Ottoman” image that has a place in the collective consciousness of Europeans. This article will focus on Nasuh's approach to orientalism, based on his second mission. The study is based on the fact that the author's view of orientalism and orientalists through the novel A Turk in Paris is not one-sided but can be evaluated under three headings as “criticism, correction and appreciation”.
