Abstract
Languages bear the traces of life in the geographies where their speakers live. The Turkish language, too, possesses a rich vocabulary that reflects the cultural relationships developed by Turks with the societies they interacted with in the regions where they settled over centuries. In every society, it is possible to identify traces of the unique values of the Turks in the rituals they create and practice regarding transitional periods of life such as birth, marriage, and death, as well as in material and spiritual cultural elements such as clothing, food and drink, architecture, music, folk medicine, and religion. Societies are distinguished from one another by the national material and spiritual cultural values they create. In Türkiye, studies on dialect research initially began with compilation activities and continued in later years with studies aimed at identifying the phonetic or morphological linguistic features of the region in question. In dialect research studies, the content, origin, structure, semantic dimension of the region's vocabulary, and the characteristics that determine the dialect regions of the region, etc., are mostly not addressed. This article, prepared under the title "Words That Have Retained Their Form and Meaning in the Dialects of Van Province II," clearly traces the changes in the vocabulary of the Turkish language mentioned above. Because some of the words used in the historical periods of the Turkish language have undergone changes in terms of sound and meaning in the process leading to Turkish spoken in Turkey, while some words have fallen out of use. This article was written to identify these words that were used in the historical periods of the Turkish language and have undergone changes in sound and meaning or are no longer used in the written Turkish language of Turkey. Although the Azeri and Terekeme dialects of the border provinces of Van, Bitlis, Kars, Iğdır, Ardahan, and Ağrı, which are the border provinces of the Eastern Anatolia region, are included within the Eastern Anatolian dialects in terms of phonetics, morphology, and vocabulary, they also share many common characteristics with the written language and dialects of Azerbaijani Turkish. When studies on the dialects of Van province are examined, it is seen that many words used in the historical periods of the Turkish language have been preserved in terms of form and meaning in the regional dialects. In the dialects of Van province, a portion of the vocabulary preserved in terms of form and meaning consists of words of Turkish and Mongolian origin that began to be used during the Chagatai Turkish period and were transferred from Chagatai Turkish to Azerbaijani Turkish. Another part of the vocabulary that has preserved its form and meaning in the dialects of Van province consists of words that were actively used during the Old Turkish and Middle Turkish periods. While these words fell out of use in Standard Turkish due to changing living conditions and technological developments, they continued to be used in the dialects of Van province. Another part of the words that were actively used in the historical periods of the Turkish language have undergone semantic changes in the process leading to Turkish spoken in Turkey, and have reached Turkish spoken in Turkey with different meanings. In the dialects of Van province, however, it is observed that these words have maintained the meanings they were used with throughout the historical period.
