EU Discourse of the Justice and Development Party in 2002 General Elections: A Linguistic Discourse Analysis

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the attitude and discourse of the Justice and Development Party (Tur. Adalet ve Kalkınma Partisi, AKP) towards Turkey's EU membership in the 2002 general elections through linguistic discourse analysis. The method, also known as the Dusseldorf School, was taken as the basis for the analysis. In accordance with this; the party program of AKP, the election manifesto and the corpus obtained from the determined national newspapers were discussed and analyzed in terms of vocabulary, metaphor concept and argumantation (Ger: Lexik-Metaphorik-Argumentation). In terms of the methodology applied, this study presents a relatively unique approach to the analysis of political discourses, which are mostly examined by the method of critical discourse analysis. It can be said that the above-mentioned three-stage analysis model developed by the Dusseldorf School was applied for the first time in this sense in Turkey. The study revealed that the Justice and Development Party has a very positive attitude towards Turkey's EU membership, contrary to the tradition of National View (tr. Millî Görüş) it has come from. And he justified this attitude with both the vocabulary and metaphor concepts he created and the various arguments he presented.
