The Story of an Institution: Hacettepe University and İhsan Doğramacı

Abstract

This study examines the founding process of Hacettepe University and the role played by İhsan Doğramacı in this process. One of the key figures who sustained and further developed the foundations of modern medical education and health reform laid by M. K. Atatürk in Republican Türkiye was İhsan Doğramacı. By adapting his international experience to Türkiye's health and education systems, he made significant contributions to the university establishment process. This study adopts a historical research method and examines Doğramacı’s vision and practices through written and oral sources, memoirs, biographical works, interviews, and documents obtained from state archives. The research highlights Hacettepe University’s impact on Türkiye's healthcare and educational systems and evaluates the leadership qualities of Doğramacı that shaped this success. The findings indicate that, thanks to Doğramacı’s innovative approach to education and administration, as well as his international connections, Hacettepe rapidly developed into a pioneering and exemplary university in the fields of education and healthcare.
