Abstract

One of the important sources that provide data about the socio-cultural characteristics and lifestyle of a society is the written and oral narratives belonging to that society. Travelogues, one of these narrative types, are one of the most comprehensive sources that can be consulted throughout history, and at the same time, one of the most vividly reflecting contemporary cultural and social life. In this sense, Evliya Çelebi's Travelogue is a work that should be examined in terms of Turkish culture and history. It sheds light on the historical and cultural values of the society to which it belongs to the oral and written literary genres. Saltukname is one of the important Turkish epics in this sense. Although these two works, which are important in terms of Turkish history and folklore, were written in different genres, they have many similar motifs. One of these motifs is the witch motif, which has an important place in folk culture and narratives. Witches are one of the supernatural beings in Turkish culture. This supernatural being, which has spread to art and literature over time, has a wide place in Turkish history and literature as well as in the world. In this study, the witch motif, one of the common motifs found in Evliya Çelebi's Seyahatname and Saltukname epic, was examined. A comparative study was conducted, first the witch motif was discussed separately in both works, then the study was completed by comparing the similarities and differences in the type, shape and content of the motif in the texts.
