Abstract

This study focuses on the analysis of Malina (1971), a novel by Ingeborg Bachmann—one of Austria’s most distinguished writers and poets in German literature—which reflects the state of consciousness in the post-war period. The analysis is conducted in light of the fundamental theses of existentialist philosophy. Bachmann, who studied philosophy at the universities of Innsbruck, Graz, and Vienna and completed her doctoral thesis in 1949 titled Die kritische Aufnahme der Existenzphilosophie Martin Heideggers, is a writer deeply engaged with philosophy. In her works, she reflects the existential crises and dilemmas of the modern subject with exceptional artistic creativity, making full use of literature’s powerful expressive potential. The novel Malina is not only the story of a striking lament that embodies the drama of the modern subject weakened by psychological terror, destruction, and collapse in the existential battlefield of the inner world, but also an alternative, fantastical, fairy-tale-like utopian world that gestures toward hope and resolution. The text Malina provides a strong reference to existentialist philosophy in terms of the existential themes it addresses. The hypothesis of this study is that Malina deals with the existential problem of the modern subject. As a concrete example of the interdisciplinary connections between literature and philosophy, this study will employ the hermeneutic method alongside an eclectic approach that combines author-, reader-, and context-oriented critical perspectives.
