Abstract

This article examines Nilgün Marmara’s poetry in the context of Friedrich Nietzsche’s concepts of nihilism, suffering and artistic creation. Although Marmara’s work often conveys an image of a melancholic and seemingly passive poetic voice, her poems reveal a subject who confronts the limits of existence at the threshold of nothingness and transforms this confrontation into a mode of artistic production. Based on Nietzsche’s distinction between passive and active nihilism, this study argues that Marmara transforms her ontological suffering into an aesthetic expression and seeks to overcome the inertia of massive nihilism through the power of artistic creation. In this regard, even if Marmara personally adopts a stance that may be interpreted as passive nihilism, her artistic production leans toward the domain of active nihilism. The recurring motifs of pain, nothingness and silence in her poetry and prose do not signify an end or dissolution of the self but rather mark a threshold of creative transformation. Thus, Marmara’s poetics offer a response to the collapseof traditional values in Nietzschean philosophy, emphasizing that what truly matters is not despair but creation. Her individual collapse gains meaning through the transformative force of art, wherein suffering is aesthetically reconfigured. Such a stance situates Marmara on an trajectory from passive nihilism toward active nihilism, illuminating the possibilities of reconstructing existence through aesthetic means in the wake of destruction.
