Abstract
This article aims to undertake a comprehensive analysis of a pivotal passage titled ‘Abdulhamid Dream’ from Oğuz Atay’s renowned novel, Tutunamayanlar (The Disconnected), originally published in 1971. Widely regarded as one of the most significant literary works in Turkey, Tutunamayanlar serves as a crucial resource for examining the complexities of modernization. Through subjecting the passage to a systematic examination, this study aims to challenge prevailing assumptions and disrupt fixed interpretations using Derridean deconstruction. By problematizing dualities in the text, this study questions the hierarchical structure of Turkish modernization. Through deconstructive analysis, the inherent assumptions, fixed meanings, and power structures within the text will be critically scrutinized and interrogated. This approach involves adopting multiple perspectives, unearthing inherent contradictions, and questioning established frameworks, with the aim of unmasking deeper layers of meaning. For this purpose, The Introduction highlights the significance of Atay’s novel in the context of the discourse on modernization in Turkey. In this section, the literature on Tutunamayanlar is discussed within the framework of the debate surrounding Fredric Jameson’s concept of the ‘national allegory.’ In this context, the novel, which originates from a personal quest, delves into the significance of a dream scene featuring historical figures and how it will be approached from the perspective of modernism. The article clearly outlines its intention to challenge prevailing assumptions and interpretations through a rigorous and systematic examination of the text. The Methodology section discusses the possibilities of using the deconstruction approach as an analytical method and discusses the strategies to be used in the analysis of the text. Additionally, it explains how concepts of binary oppositions and différance will be utilized in the analysis of the text. The Analysis section reveals the internal layers of meaning by conducting a detailed examination of the text and examining its linguistic, narrative, and thematic elements. Atay’s criticism of the modernization project of the Republic, the themes of official historiography, and the inability to internalize the Republican revolutions are discussed in the context. The article demonstrates that Atay’s critique inadvertently reproduces the binary oppositions he stands against.
Abstract (Turkish)
Atay’ın, Cumhuriyet’in modernleşme projesine yönelik eleştirisi, resmi tarih yazımı ve Cumhuriyet devrimlerinin içselleştirilememesi temaları bağlamında tartışılmaktadır. Makale, Atay’ın eleştirisinin, karşısında durduğu karşıt ikilikleri yeniden ürettiğini göstermektedir.
