Özet
Aim: This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of nutrition education provided to parents in two primary schools with different socioeconomic levels on parents’ mealtime behaviors and children’s eating habits. Materials and Methods: The study was conducted as an intervention-control study between January 2019 and April 2019 in Gaziantep province with the participation of 168 students and their parents (education group: n=70, control group: n=98). A 40-minute structured nutrition education program aimed at supporting healthy eating behaviors in children was provided by the researchers to the parents in the education group. Data were collected twice, before the education and 15 days after the education, using the sociodemographic characteristics form, the Student Health Assessment Questionnaire (SHAQ), the Parent Mealtime Action Scale (PMAS), and food consumption records. Results: A statistically significant increase was found in the total number of main meals and total number of meals among the parents in the education group after the education (p=0.034 and p=0.027, respectively). Although the changes were not statistically significant, it was observed that the rates of skipping breakfast and lunch decreased, while the rates of having breakfast at home and bringing lunch from home increased among the students whose parents received education (p>0.05). In the education group, no statistically significant change was found in the PMAS subscale scores after the education (p>0.05). After the education, significant relationships were identified between students’ protein, carbohydrate, and fat intakes and the parents’ positive persuasion, use of rewards, insistence on eating, and daily fruit and vegetable availability subscales (p
