Abstract

Çaltılar Höyük is located in the Çaltılar neighborhood of the Seydikemer district in Muğla Province. Systematic excavations initiated at the site in 2021 have revealed a cultural layer dated to the Archaic Period, which appears to comprise two sub–phases. Stratigraphic evidence clearly differentiates the early and late phases of the Archaic Period, indicating that the earlier phase ended with an earthquake, after which the settlement was reorganized in the later phase. Excavations conducted across six sectors have yielded finds classified in the literature as “Lydian pottery,” which constitute the main focus of this study. In this context, ceramics decorated using the Streaked Ware (Damarlı Boyalı) technique were identified and categorized into two groups. The first group is distinguished by higher firing temperatures, controlled kiln use, and aesthetically refined decoration, whereas the second group, based on clay composition and decorative execution, exhibits simpler production techniques. The Lydian pottery assemblage at Çaltılar Höyük includes forms such as plates, stemmed dishes, bowls, storage jars, and phialai, as well as body sherds whose precise forms could not be fully determined. These finds indicate that the settlement was part of a broader network of cultural and commercial interaction. The wide geographical distribution of Lydian ceramics during the 7th–6th centuries BCE allows the Çaltılar Höyük examples to be dated to this period. Within this framework, Çaltılar Höyük appears to have maintained direct or indirect connections with the Lydian Kingdom, which held a central position of power in Western Anatolia.
