Abstract

Purpose: To research the relationship between burden, anxiety and depression of caregivers of stroke patiens with patients’ education level and caregiving period Material and Methods This research was made through 38 stroke patients and their caregivers after which they were released after treatment from a Stroke Rehabilitation and Research Center of a Private hospital. The sociodemographic attributes of caregivers were determined through a short questionnaire. To analyze burden of caregivers Caregiver Burden Scale (CBS); for depression, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and Beck Depression Scale (BDS); and for the anxiety Continuous Anxiety Scale (CAS Form TX-1 and TX-2) were used. The funtional situation of the stroke patients was analyzed with Functional Independence Scale (FIS). Percentage distribution of data was scaled and the direction and level of the relation between the factors were analyzed with Spearman Rank Correlation. Results: From all caregivers 26 of them were (%68.4) female, 12 of them (%31.6) were male. Caregivers’ average of age was 53.6±10.2). 18 of caregivers’ graduated from high school. 14 of them were working in a regular job at the same time. Average caregiving period was 10.6±15.4) months. It is determined that between caregiving period and caregivers’ anxiety, depression and caregiving burden score there was a positive relationship with caregivers’ burden, depression and anxiety (r=0.40, p<0.05, r=0.42, p<0.01, r=0.34, p<0.05, and r=0.46, p<0.01, r=0.40, p<0,05). Also it is determined that there was a negative relationship between the education level of patients’ and caregivers’ caregiving burden and depression score (r=-0.44, p<0.01, r=- 0.40, p<0.05, r=0.34, p<0.05).Conclusions: In our research caregivers’ depression and anxiety increased when caregiving time and burden increased. This results appeared that stroke effects caregivers’ physical work load and also social and emotional lives. It is important to protect balance of occupational performances for caregivers to decrease anxiety and depression caused by caregiving burden. For all these reasons for caregivers , the interventions which are made for improving health and well-being and providing occupational balance is also important while the responsibilities of ergotherapists are about to increse functional independence and attandence of social activities of patients.
