Abstract
The aim of this study was to determine the effects of occupational performance and satisfaction on community participation and quality of life of gynecologic cancer patients who receive chemotherapy. Material and Methods: 30 gynecologic cancer patients, who had been receiving chemotherapytreatment at Dr. Zekai Tahir Burak Education and Research Hospital Chemotherapy Center between September 2011 and February 2012, were randomly assigned for evaluation and included in the study. Socio-demographic characteristics of the patients were assessed with a questionnaire which was prepared by the researcher; occupational performance and satisfaction were assessed with COPM (Canadian Occupational Performance Measurement) and quality of life was assessed with FACT-G test (Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-General). Frequencies were calculated, and the direction and extent of the relationship between the variables were examined using the Pearson’s correlation analysis. Results: The average age of people in the study was 54.96 ± 10.52. When productivity of patients was examined; %90 of patients were not working and they were housewives. Of the patients, 73.3% were married and 70% of them had moderate economic situation. Of the 30 patients, 76.7% had ovarian cancer, 3.3% had cervical cancer and 20% had endometrial cancer. According to COPM results % 19 of patients declared that the hardest activity was to visit neighbours. Between occupational performance scores and community participation (r= ,442,p<0,05), quality of life (r=,403, p<0,05) positive correlation was found. There was a positive correlation between occupational satisfaction scores and quality of life scores (r=,458, p<0,05). Conclusion: The results have shown that the occupational performance and satisfaction have significant effects on community participation. This result showed us the physical side-effect of cancer and that chemotherapy does not only affect the activity performance but also affect community participation and quality of life parameters which are used for medical treatment and rehabilitation success. Therefore, occupational therapists should assess self care, productivity and leisure activities of individuals along with personal and environmental factors and plan, implement interventions for increasing quality of life and community participation in cancer rehabilitation units.
