Abstract

Every state and society in history has experienced its historical trajectory within its own specific time and space, driven by its internal dynamics. Throughout their reign, states have confronted significant challenges across virtually every domain. Consequently states have sought solutions to surmount each issue or crisis they encountered. The events transpiring during this process have naturally been etched into the collective memory of states and societies taking their place within the annals of history. Throughout the political history of the Mamluk Sultanate a prominent state in Medieval history intense political rivalries invariably occurred between the sultans and the high-ranking emirs within the state hierarchy. The political scene prevailing within the high-ranking administration of the state, especially during the reign of Sultan al-Nasir Muhammad ibn Qalawun’s sons, reflects this very dynamic. Accordingly, this research conducted under the title Political and Social Tensions in the Mamluk State is confined to the era of his successors between 1341 and 1361. The period and timeframe selected for this study are highly suitable for presenting the evaluations intended within the scope of this article. A primary objective of this research is to adopt a holistic perspective on Mamluk history through the specific subject matter explored. Chronologically, the study focuses on the period starting ninety years after the establishment of the state. Accordingly, the reigns of each sultan have been examined under separate headings. This specific classification is essential for a comprehensive understanding of the subject and for facilitating a broader historical outlook. This study was prepared by drawing upon primary sources of the period and contemporary scholarly research, utilizing the method of content analysis.
