Abstract

Purpose: The aim of the study was to demonstrate how news articles about children at risk were presented in the mainstream press. Materials and Method: We selected four daily newspapers with high daily circulation believed to represent different opinions. We reviewed all articles on children at risk in the Cumhuriyet, Hürriyet, Radikal, and Zaman newspapers between 1 January and 31 December 2011. We categorized and counted these articles, evaluated article content and presentation, and performed content analysis. Results: The total number of articles on children at risk was quite low compared to the general number of articles. The news about children were mostly about violence and the children were mostly depicted as victims of violence. Others were sexual assault, abuse and rape. The least common subject was child labor. We found that the media disregarded the increased use of children in crime. conclusion: In summary, the children were only depicted as victims in the press and even positive articles were not sensitive to child rights
