Abstract

Iron and blacksmithing are sacred in Turkish culture. Turks, who succeeded in blacksmithing in all periods of history, established a similarity between blacksmiths and shamans, the leaders of Shamanism, and developed different beliefs related to blacksmithing. The sacredness attributed to iron is sometimes personified through blacksmiths and sometimes symbolized through the sword. In addition to being an instrument of war, the sword also represents concepts such as power, strength, durability and trust. With industrialization and mechanization, the value attributed to iron, the blacksmith and the sword begins to change. In the 20th century, blacksmithing lost its pre-eminent position. Growing up surrounded by oral culture since his childhood, compiling elegies and narrating epics, Yaşar Kemal is aware that oral culture is the basis of written literature, and he often makes use of oral literature products such as epics, legends and folk tales in his novels. The author, who also includes folk crafts in his works, is most interested in the craft of blacksmithing; while the iron forges and blacksmiths he admires are the subject of his novels, he also reveals the changes in Turkish society through iron. In his novel The Legend of the Thousand Bulls (1971), Yaşar Kemal deals with the change in the value attributed to blacksmithing and the sword according to social conditions, based on the land problem of a Yoruk tribe. In our study, after emphasizing the concepts of iron, blacksmithing and sword in Turkish culture, the novel The Legend of the Thousand Bulls is analyzed in terms of the cult of blacksmithing.

Abstract (Turkish)

Yaşar Kemal’in 'Binboğalar Efsanesi' Romanında Demircilik Kültü
