Abstract

Purpose: This study was planned to investigate nutritional habits of female students living in the dormitories in school days and holidays separately, and to examine relations among meal consumption, body image, emotional status and academic achievement. Material and methods Seventy-four female students in college dormitories (age=20.12±1.39years) were enrolled. Information on academic achievement, meal time data and dieting status were asked. Within the scope of a survey organized by the researcher, nutrition habits, levels of appetite in different emotional status, body image satisfaction, fear of weight gain, parents’ attitudes about body images and levels of general health was analyzed by visual analog scale. Results. When we compared school day with holiday, there were significant differences in nutrition habits (p=0.045), number of meal consumption (p=0.001), and when their appetite in sadness and happiness were compared (p=0.014). There were correlations between body mass index and fear of weight gain (r=0.36;p=0.002), parents’ attitudes about body images (r=0.27p=0.018), and body image satisfaction (r=-0.37;p=0.001). And also, correlations were determined between nutrition habit and academic performance in holidays and school time (respectively r=0.27;p=0.018, r=0.29;p=0.010). Conclusion: Due to close relationship among nutrition and body image satisfaction, psychosocial situations and academic success, accurate and adequate nutrition must be paid attention by the rehabilitation team, dormitory administration and teachers. Further studies including larger groups are needed.
